CONWY, 5/12/10 ~ What a quackin' days fishing

Following the recent spell of arctic weather, you could be forgiven for questioning the sanity of those who chose to fish this match. An apparent slight thaw hadn't really happened, and a frozen lake greeted us. Good job Wirral had fished the previous day, and broke the ice on enough swims for us. Most needed to be broken again, but with a lot less effort. A big thanks to Gary Chambers for clearing the pegs again. Two swims had remained ice free, due to every duck on the lake being in one place. The lucky anglers to draw these were Yozzer and Jamie. I say lucky only because there was little or no ice to clear. Them bloody ducks were a noisy bunch, and spent most of the day splashing around in the water.
It certainly didn't affect the fishing as Yozzer ran out the winner with 25lb 08oz of maggot caught roach from a 5m line. (I would have fished long but the ice wouldn't let me).
Runner-up, and thoroughly enjoying himself, was big Neil Paterson. Not only did he catch skimmers, F1s and some nice looking goldfish, which tipped the scales at 18lb 12oz, he was like a kid in a sweet shop watching a robin sit in his bait box eating maggots. Nice job Neil, or should I say David Attenboro', good to see you enjoy the day out.
Just for once John Heald used his vast venue knowledge, and decided not to fish for carp. A rare sight at the weigh in was John bringing 18lb 04oz of roach to the scales, which was enough to get him on the podium. Well done JH, a sight to behold, especially seeing you impail a maggot on a size 12 paste hook!
With further weights of 16, 2x 14, and a couple of 12s, everyone admitted that it was worth the journey, and had an enjoyable day's fishing.
