LINGMERE, 4/1/15 ~ Newboy Chris thwarted by Jamie masterstroke

With reports coming out that Xmas knock-ups had produced several ton-ups, culminating in Steve Openshaw weighing in a staggering 137lb on Friday, it was sod's law that things wouldn't be quite that good for The Eggy. Notwithstanding the difference in angling ability, this was as much of a let down as we could possibly imagine.
Once again general opinion was that the bottom lake would produce the better sport. With the amount of fish in the lake and the great weights of previous days, everyone would catch, surely. Amazingly, everyone did catch, even if it was only ounces.
Grueller doesn't seem to accurately describe how hard it was. With an hour gone and one carp to show, Jamie Pickup pulled a masterstroke. He got a rod from the bag and proceeded to set up a waggler. Not the now standard pellet waggler that has become an obsession, but a good old fashioned 3BB peacock waggler. Going twice as far as anybody else on the float, Jambo caught some decent carp throughout. 37lb 03oz was the reward, and to illustrate his dominance, the next best was Simo with 12lb odd.
At the other end of the spectrum, Paul Cargill won a section with 3lb 01oz !!!! That's right THREE pounds. Well done for sticking it out.
The other section winner, after a festive break, was Steve Coleman. A golden tench of all things, featured in his winning 9lb 15oz, so a big well done to Steve, too.
Up on the top lake, 3 decent weights, but plenty of DNWs, so very hit and miss. New boy Chris Roe was telling everyone how he'd only joined the club to gain experience and learn a few things from other members. On this performance we'll be learning a few things from him! Chris caught steadily all match, and despite losing a handful along the way, he had Jamie panicking at the scales. Agony in one respect as the needle fell short of a debut win when it settled at 36lb 15oz, but joy at making the frame on his first outing with the club. Massive congratulations.
3rd place, with a decent enough weight of 28lb odd was Yozzer, all F1s on pellet.
First section on the top was contested by 2 more new boys, with Nick 'swipe' Harrop seeing off the challenge of the returning Tony Wilson with 9lb 15oz, with the others in section failing to weigh.
Another section win went the way of John Edwards with an excellent 20lb 00oz. Just scraped through in "the challenge" so great for Sumo. Typically, having been beaten by Sumo, the others in section did not weigh and sat in cars sulking.
Maybe the next outing at Lingmere will produce those magical 100lb bags.... then again...... gotta be there to find out.

    1. It's easy casting a 15-20g PELLET waggler with a 12in drop and an 8mm pellet, I was using a 3AAA REAL waggler with a 3 1/2ft drop with maggot/caster with a light to moderate side wind. Finesse at its very best. Anyway hope you enjoyed the show and remember the old Chinese proverb " Your only as good as ya last match". Yee haaaaa. Fat cunt. And don't be makin excuses about peg 35, it's a flier, you just wasted it. New wheels please. Haha.

    3. It took me all morning to set it up as I thought I'd give you a chance to catch more than one Roach. But once I'd set it up, the rest as they say is history. You got toasted. Didn't need to cast it over the island, just a small chuck to the aerator, with my finely balanced tackle, REAL waggler, light hooklength, small hook and small baits. No need for stupid big heavy pellet wagglers. As I said, FINESSE. worked a treat don't ya think. Hope ya neck ain't to stiff with all the turning round you were doin watching me play and land my quality fish on my finely balanced tackle. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the show and better luck next time. Waaaannnkkkeeeeerrrrr.

    9. Now now play nicely boys.........now for a bit of reality. The aerator was black and a blind squirrel would have founds the nuts. That said it took 2 hours before J went for a walk and a coffee and came back to chuck the waggler. but catch them he did tripling anyone else. As for peg 35 its a section winning peg if you know what your doing......at least it was in the last match haha.

  3. Good write up as normal Yozz. Great to see 5 out of the 7 new members out. Hopefully they all enjoyed the 1st match. I had a great laugh next to Simmo as usual. Always plenty of banter between us when we fish next to each other. Hopefully the next one will fish better and we don't get any rain and the weather settles a bit.

  5. I'll try again as the last post went a bit Pete Tong

    Top comments of the day:

    1. Dirk was moaning he was casting just short of the fish on the waggler line. Ste C pipes up "just lean forward ya fool"

    2. Jamie manages to hook himself in his hairy hat to which there was only one response "haha J's hooked a knobhead!'

    3. Pato at the draw......'don't let me draw next to im' (meaning me) ' he does my head in before I even start he does'.....I have no idea what I have done to upset the gentle giant......any clues?

    2. ted........right yeah ted......I'll have you know "your very close mate" is seen by many as a gentle giant who shows genuine concern and compassion for his fellow club members and is a delight to be around however if I am honest I often become quite distraught that my very presence on the next peg appears to create somewhat of a cataclysmic change in the big man's otherwise charitable demeanor.....for that I am truly sorry and offer my humble apologies to both of you.

I must add I am not sure 'him' being Irish Champion is an appropriate or reasoned response to my question and provides little factual rationale for such bipolar behaviour!

In answer to what I have won, nothing really unless small psychological victory's before the all in is counted lol!!!

  10. ........the only advice I am gonna give you big man is do your own thing and stop listening to others, they can only tell you how "they" fish it not how "you" should.....

.....oh and your TV choices are rank haha!! See you Sunday.

  11. Awww don't go Ted. Simo is right, stop worrying about how everyone else is doing it and fish it your way. Sooner or later you'll empty it using 6 tins of yellow stuff. And remember, it shouldn't matter that much, it's only fishing

  12. Truth is.
There is a right way and a wrong way, find out what is the right way and adapt it to suit your style of fishing.
It's no good getting the basics wrong, you will fail every time but get the basics right and your halfway there. Then start adapting it to suit the way you fish, we all do it differently. It's what makes the world go round.

    2. Spadge, I know what you're saying...but...... which way is the right way? If you read the magazines at present they will generally tell you that less is more in the winter months. Try feeding bugger all at Lingmere, for example, and you catch bugger all. I'm confused.com

  13. Start with 5-10 micros, no more and take it from there, the old adage you can't take it out once you've put it in is a good starting point. The hardest part is finding what depth they want to feed in, so feed different lines at different depths.
Oh and Jamie, without you phoning Alan Dewhurst every saturday night before a lingy match you would be as shite as you are on every other venue, you even ring him when you've drawn for info Knobhead.....whooooohoooooo.

    1. David, thank you for your response. It's so easy to forget about that old guideline, you can't take it out............ Then again, if you remember nowt else it will always be a good starting point. Over to you Ted

    2. Is that not the same as you phoning Tony Moran.
Pot and kettle spring to mind. Knob.

  14. I don't ring anyone and I am no expert but I think there is a lot to be said for trying lots of lines for F1's with just a little feed and as Spadger says try various depths.......finding somewhere just a little shallower or deeper can be worth a few fish at this time of year as Spadger proved to me on our last match even where I had fed nowt and it was no more than 3 ft from an area I had fed and couldn't catch from.......food for thought....opened my eyes!

    1. In all seriousness my experience on Lingmere in the winter is to fish one line. I usually plumb around 13m and never come any closer. I'll look for variations in the depth as Spadger says. I very rarely feed more than one line at a time. If I haven't had any indications within 30-40 mins I will then move either left or right or even put another section on (14.5m). I try my best not to complicate things with silly shotting patterns, I just use a bulk 4in above my hook and dot my float to a dimple. F1s need feed to stay in your swim, if you don't keep putting bait in, they will go. Trust me on that. They eat what's there then they disappear. I know it's winter but you need to feed. Not massive pot fulls but it needs to keep goin in or you will loose em. Simple as that. If you doubt what I'm saying about f1s, go onto Joe Carasses YouTube channel and watch his underwater camera with f1s. You will be very surprised.

    2. more correctly put....fish one line at a time which is the same as what I was saying.....I think!
